Who Will Buy the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS?

It really surprised me when GoPro announced the Mission 1 line of cameras. Somehow, they managed to keep the secret incredibly well, and when the cameras were finally revealed, almost everyone seemed shocked.

The specs are out of this world, the features look amazing, and even the accessories have people saying GoPro may have finally “nailed it.”

However, I was surprised to see so much negative reaction toward the Mission 1 Pro ILS system. A LOT of people were asking:

  • “What were GoPro thinking?”
  • “Who is this even aimed at?”
  • “What type of joke is this?”

So I decided to take a deeper dive into the people making these comments, and honestly, I wasn’t surprised by what I found.

I won’t name names, but many of the people criticizing the camera were those who exclusively use competing camera brands. Some of them also seem to get their hands on competitor products before launch, which usually means they are paid influencers. And yes, receiving a free camera is still a form of payment, folks.

So it’s really no surprise that they are trashing the competition.

The other group of complainers were people who use action cameras completely “straight out of the box” and never customize them in any meaningful way.

It’s not that they are upset GoPro is offering an ILS camera system. It’s that they don’t fully understand the advantages of interchangeable lens systems — or even what they are designed for.

It’s basic human psychology to fear the unknown… and sometimes people hate what they don’t understand.

True filmmakers know the value of an ILS camera system

Who Is the GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS Actually For?

Simple: professional filmmakers.

Now, don’t get me wrong — nobody is replacing an IMAX film camera with a Mission 1 Pro ILS. (Looking at you, Christopher Nolan.)

But that’s not what this camera is supposed to do.

The Mission 1 Pro ILS is designed to be another tool in a filmmaker’s toolbox.

GoPro cameras have already been used in major productions for years to capture difficult “tight” shots that would be nearly impossible with larger cinema cameras.

Want footage from inside a microwave while someone opens the door to grab a coffee cup?

You can simply place a GoPro inside and film the scene. Then, within minutes, you can move back to your primary camera setup and continue filming normally.

Or…

You could cut out the back of the microwave, somehow squeeze a giant IMAX camera into it, build a custom support rig, modify the set walls, rebuild lighting, and spend hours resetting everything afterward.

That doesn’t even include the additional labor costs, prop builds, or time required from a unionized film crew.

The same logic applies to mailbox shots, dashboard-mounted angles, car window shots, or any situation where you need a camera to disappear into the environment.

And what about multicam setups?

Sometimes filmmakers need several tiny cameras hidden around a scene to avoid expensive reshoots or complicated insert shots later.

That’s where the Mission 1 Pro ILS starts to make a lot more sense.

Custom filming props can be expensive and time consuming to work with.

Why an Interchangeable Lens System Matters

The problem with traditional GoPro cameras is that the lens format often doesn’t match the look of the primary cinema camera being used.

That’s one reason companies like Back-Bone Gear and Peau Productions exist.

These companies create modified GoPro camera bodies and interchangeable lens systems that allow filmmakers to better match field of view, lens characteristics, and overall image style with their primary cameras.

In other words:

  • Better visual continuity
  • More flexibility
  • Less work in post-production
  • Easier color and perspective matching

The simple fact is that GoPro has finally decided to give filmmakers what many of them have wanted for years: a native interchangeable lens system for a compact action camera.

That means users can now attach third-party lenses directly to the camera without relying on expensive modifications.

The GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS will work with most 3rd party Micro 4/3 lenses

The Real Audience for the Mission 1 Pro ILS

The competition will complain because they don’t offer this.

People who have never used interchangeable lenses will complain because they don’t understand the advantages.

Meanwhile, filmmakers and content creators who have been waiting for a compact interchangeable lens action camera will probably be celebrating.

Because now we finally have the ability to use a powerful small-form-factor camera in cinematic environments while maintaining better lens consistency with larger production cameras.

That opens the door to tighter shots, faster setups, cheaper productions, and more creative flexibility than ever before.

And honestly?

That sounds exactly like the kind of thing filmmakers have been asking for.

Please note that the above article is based entirely upon personal opinion, personal experience, caffeine consumption levels, and whatever random thoughts happened to be bouncing around inside my head at the time of writing. It may also contain links to external websites. If you click on those links and purchase something, I may receive a small commission at absolutely no extra cost to you. That money goes toward funding DemonView.com, the related YouTube channels, camera gear, replacement camera gear after I accidentally break the first camera gear, and occasionally snacks.

By reading this disclaimer all the way to the end, you have demonstrated an impressive level of dedication and attention to detail. Scientists would probably study you if they had the funding available. Most people stop reading tiny print after the first sentence, but not you. You stayed committed. You pushed through. You are basically the action hero of legal disclaimers.

You should also know that while I greatly appreciate your support, I am not secretly monitoring your life through hidden GoPros placed inside household appliances. The microwave scene mentioned earlier in this article was purely for filmmaking discussion purposes and not because I have some sort of weird obsession with filming people reheating coffee at 2AM while standing in their pajamas questioning their life choices.

That would be ridiculous.

Also, extremely difficult from a WiFi signal standpoint.

Anyway, thanks for supporting DemonView.com and helping keep the cameras rolling. Literally. Because camera gear is expensive and apparently lenses now cost roughly the same as a used Honda Civic.ivic.
